Lee has never put much stock into birthdays. His own never really mattered to him, because it never really mattered to anyone else. He would always try to get something for Kayla on her birthday, but that was about the extent of it.

All that is to say that Lee feels woefully prepared to plan a birthday for his-- whatever George is. Boyfriend? That feels so juvenile, like it isn't important enough.

He stresses about it more than he probably needs to, but he's never had the opportunity to celebrate something like this with someone he cares about. Which is already sort of a big deal, but George was the lover of a literal king and was undoubtedly showered with expensive gifts on a regular basis. Lee has no idea how to compete with that, even though he can hear George's voice in his head telling him that it isn't a competition. Which is good, because he'd probably lose.

The actual night isn't much of a problem. He comes up with a plan pretty easily, one that's simple but romantic, he thinks. It's the gift that's the problem. Because nothing in this whole goddamn city is good enough for George. Nothing that he can afford, anyway.

Just days before, he still hasn't found anything and he's getting sort of desperate. He distracts himself by going on a hunt because he really does need to eat, which sort of just makes him feel worse because of the guilt. But the guy is (was) a verified scumbag and women walking alone at night will be safer without him around, so he doesn't feel too bad.

In the guy's pocket is a receipt for a pawn shop that Lee has never heard of, so he goes to check it out the next day. It's in a terrible part of town and there isn't really even a sign. Inside it's dusty and unorganized and Lee just assumes it's some sort of front for something else. Still, he decides to look around while some guy comes out from the back and eyes him with wary suspicion, like he's surprised to see someone in the shop at all.

He finds a dusty jewelry display case and heads toward it hopefully, crouching down in front of it. Inside are mostly gold chains and tennis bracelets, all generic shit that wouldn't suit George at all, and he's about to give up when he spots a blue velvet box tucked back into a corner, half-hidden under a gaudy necklace. It looks like earrings and Lee rises to his feet and coolly asks to take a look at them, not wanting to show any excitement and inadvertently drive the price up. He knows how these places operate.

The guy takes them out of the case and Lee picks them up, doing his best to keep a placid expression even though he's pretty sure he just found what he's looking for. The box looks well-preserved but very old, as do the earrings themselves. He has no idea if the stones are real, but they look like it. There's a small piece of yellowed paper tucked inside, and when Lee discreetly unfolds it he finds elegant cursive scrawl and, most importantly, it's dated 1827. That confirms that they’re old, probably very old, and this guy doesn’t seem to really realize what he has. They're perfect.

Lee is prepared to use every trick in his arsenal to haggle a deal, but it's not even that hard. The guy seems wholly uninterested in this alleged business, and Lee is annoying and persistent, so he ends up getting them for a price that, while painful, won't leave him destitute. When he leaves the shop, earrings tucked carefully into his pocket, he feels lighter than he has in days.

George's birthday comes and they sleep in, then fuck a few times and sleep some more. Lee makes them a late lunch and then tells George that he needs to go run a few errands before they go to dinner, but there's an obvious twinkle in his eye. He leaves George's apartment and goes to his own where he's left all the supplies, and then goes and sets everything up before heading back toward George's building, texting him and telling him to come downstairs, even as he parks and gets out to go meet him by the elevators in the lobby.

He's nervous, but he thinks that this might actually go well. He might actually pull it off.

Lee smiles at that, feeling a warm rush of affection that’s long since become familiar to him when it comes to George. It’s so nice to be considered.

“You don’t. I’m not sure you could,” Lee assures him, touching their noses together again and giving him a soft kiss, stroking George’s cheek with his thumb. “But I know that I can tell you if you do.”

He opens his mouth and closes it again, throat working for a moment. “I never knew what it was like to feel safe. Not until you.”

"You can. Always." His eyebrows draw together and he shifts, stroking his fingertips against bare skin with me. "I hate that. That you felt like that. You're always safe with me."

"I just...I like the play acting. The pretending that I'm taking something you're not sure if you want to give."

“I know I am,” Lee assures him, and his expression softens as George explains further. He nods a little, taking a moment to think as he cards his fingers through George’s damp hair.

“I understand the concern, given what I’ve told you about some of my experiences,” Lee begins, smiling a little and cradling George’s face again, stroking at the corner of his mouth. “But George, you’re not them. You could never be them, and I could never be afraid of you.”

His smile goes a bit playful and he shifts closer, leaning in to kiss him on the mouth. “I like the play acting, too. And— yeah, that part, too. Pretending like you’re taking something from me. Maybe that’s weird, all things considered.”

He shrugs and smiles softly, relaxing against the grass. “I like it because it’s you. And maybe— I dunno, it feels like rewriting history, in a way. I can’t explain why I like it, really. But trust me, I do.”

"Alright," says George, some of the uncertainty slipping away as Lee reassures him, looking so relaxed, so happy. "I understand that, though. A rewriting of your past in a way that puts you in control of it." He bends his head, kissing his way down the side of Lee's neck. "We can work with that, I think."

Lee smiles and nods, so pleased to be understood. He's never felt so seen by another person, and he feels very close to giggling as George's soft lips work their way down the side of Lee's neck. He lifts his arms and curls them loosely around George's broad shoulders, squeezing firmly at the back of his neck.

"You still need to put on those old clothes of yours," he murmurs against George's temple, grinning all the while. It feels silly, like they're children playing, despite the very adult topic of discussion. "And have your way with your innocent stable boy."

"You love that idea," he says, smirking, kissing across Lee's chest. There's less of the urgency that there was before; now, he just lets his mouth wander. "And how willing would my stable boy be, I wonder?"

"I do," he admits with a nod, feeling his cheeks heat up. "I-- before this, before you, I never had the chance to just... play. There was only ever one way it could be, and it was rarely fun." He sighs contentedly as George presses sweet kisses to his skin, enjoying how leisurely it is. "With you, it's fun."

He chuckles at the question and drags his nails lightly up and down George's back, humming thoughtfully. "Hm, that's a good question. Slightly more willing than he'd let on, I think. But it would still take some... persuading,."

"Good. I'm glad. It should be fun." Sex hasn't always been fun for him -- sometimes, it's felt like obligation -- but, more often that not, he's enjoyed himself. He's definitely had time to play. He stays here he is, lacing lazy kisses against Lee's skin.

"I'd perhaps need to be a little heavy handed."

The implication makes him shiver, and perhaps it's weird that such a thought turns him on, but oh well. All he's really doing is indulging the darker parts of his psyche in a way that's safe, and it's just the two of them, so as long as they're both consenting that's all that really matters. The more he indulges that dark part of him, the less he might feel the need to on his hungrier days, and that's better for everyone.

"Yes, I think so," he says in a thick voice, shifting his hips as his cock starts to thicken again. Even though it never really went fully soft. It never does when George is naked around him. "You would know what I need better than I do. You would have to show me."

He laughs at that, ruffling George’s hair and tightening his fingers in it, dragging George’s head up so their eyes can meet and Lee can give him a challenging smile. “The night’s still young, my Lord. I guess you’ll just have to try harder.”

George meets that look with a tilt of his chin. Far be it for him to refuse to rise to a challenge.

George tilts his chin and clenches his jaw, and Lee knows that only something good can come from that look. The mention of the rock throws him for a moment, and then he lets out a bright laugh.

“I’d almost forgotten,” he admits, smiling and sitting up, cupping George’s face in his hands and giving him a long, lingering kiss. “I suppose we should head back over to the blankets.” He grins and kisses him again. “Now that you’ve fucked me in the grass like an animal.”

He pulls himself to his feet and reaches for George’s hand, grinning in the moonlight. “Come on. We’ll do it together.”

"I'm not promising I won't do it again, either," says George, hauling himself to his feet and then tugging Lee in close so that he can kiss him. "You seemed to enjoy it."

“Oh, I very much enjoy it when you fuck me like an animal,” Lee says with a wink, grinning as George pulls him in close and kisses him.

He’s never been so happy in his life. If he had one wish, it would be for this to never end.

“Come on, stop trying to distract me,” Lee chides playfully, slapping at George’s pert ass before pulling away and dragging him toward the rock. He’s jumped off of it enough times to know that it’s safe, otherwise he wouldn’t risk George jumping off of it at all. “A bet’s a bet.”

George grins at the slap and lets himself be guided.

"You're acting like I've never done anything fool hardy my entire life," he says, shaking his head. "I assure you I have."

“Oh, I believe it,” Lee says with a laugh, one that only gets louder as he climbs up onto the rock with a very obvious erection.

Once they’re standing on the edge, Lee threads their fingers together and looks over at George with a breathless grin, radiating happiness. He leans in to kiss him, just because he can, and then surges forward and leaps from the rock, holding onto George’s hand as they fly through the air.

He's been out of the water long enough that the cold when they hit the surface is a shock. He keeps hold of Lee's hand, though, until he kicks to the surface , pulling him in for a breathless kiss.

"Are you happy, now, you gremlin?" he asks. "Satisfied with your winnings?"

Lee is grinning when he resurfaces, wet hair flat against his head as George pulls him through the water, kissing him soundly as they tread just above the surface.

Lee nods, and he feels a little like he could cry.

“I’ve never been this happy in my life,” he admits with a soft smile, flicking his hair back and kissing George again, tugging him back toward the shore.

"I don't think I have, either," admits George, allowing himself to be towed towards the shore. "I've definitely never enjoyed my birthday this much."

“You don’t think so, huh?” Lee laughs and lets go of him only to climb out of the water, reaching up with both hands as he flicks his wet hair back and pushes it out of his face. “I guess I have some work to do.”

He smirks and stands there unabashedly naked for a moment, then heads for the back of the truck and pulls out two thick towels, tossing one over to George.

“I’m glad,” he says almost shyly, pleased that his planning turned out so well.
